Environment Week
Environment Week activities reveal organisational commitment to sustainability practices.
Wood Group encourages employees to activate their "environmentality" through planned activities around the world.
Wood Group aims to build on its vision for HSE excellence to minimise the adverse impact of our businesses and to positively improve our communities around the world for future generations. Our goal is to make a real difference by encouraging more efficient energy use and striving to modify the behaviors of our employees and businesses to conserve resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
As part of this goal, we initiated a campaign across Wood Group in 2010 that focused on three core themes: education and awareness; energy efficiency and reduction; and waste management and carbon offset. The campaign activities began early in the year with many of them taking place during Environment Week, which started May 31 and ended June 5, the United Nations' World Environment Day. Regional offices were encouraged to plan and conduct programmes in their communities that involved specific activities designed to have a local perspective.
Education & Awareness
Wood Group engaged employees and their families to participate in various activities as a means for raising awareness and improving the environment for future generations. One element of this theme was a contest entitled "Postcards from Around the World," which promoted environmental awareness for employees' children. The contest included children from five different regions around the world and four age categories: four and under, five to eight, nine-12 and 13-15, More than 240 postcards were submitted. Employees and their families were also invited to participate in the various local Environment Week activities.
Energy Efficiency & Reduction
While Wood Group's Carbon Footprint programme is making good progress toward improving our energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption in global locations, we took it a step further to encourage local offices to implement "Switch It Off" initiatives during Environment Week. Wood Group companies were asked to explore ways to reduce electricity use, which included automatic reminders for employees to shut down workstations and monitors before leaving work, and employees and families were encouraged to reduce electricity use at home whenever possible.
Waste Management & Carbon Offset
For this theme, Wood Group established its Clean & Green programme to focus on waste management and carbon offset education and activities. Companies were encouraged adopt local parks, forest areas, creeks and beaches and conduct clean up efforts.
Wood Group employees from Galway, Ireland to Abu Dhabi, from Greenville, South Carolina to Perth, Australia, scoured bays, beaches, highways and forest reserves to remove debris and trash. In addition, volunteers from Wood Group and 100 local schoolchildren joined forces with Aberdeen City Council Countryside Ranger Service to plant 1,500 trees at St Fitticks Park in East Tullos, Scotland.
Making a Difference
Overall, the Environment Week programme was successful. However, Wood Group is fully committed to continuing its focus on making a difference with regard to energy use, resource conservation and CO2 emissions–not just during Environment Week. We must always remain proactive in raising awareness within our organisation to promote our vision of minimising the impact of our businesses on the environment and positively improving our communities around the world for future generations.
