Sustainability Initiatives

Equally important to our success as an organisation, Wood Group strives to be a good corporate citizen.

At Wood Group, we seek to minimise the adverse environmental impact of our operations. Working together, we can do a world of good by turning our intentions into positive actions rather than mere words, and by remaining focused on further improvement.

Every day, we work hard to be more energy efficient and environmentally responsible. We are actively taking steps to measure and reduce our carbon emissions. In 2009, we introduced a carbon footprint pilot programme to help us better understand carbon management and identify ways to reduce carbon use throughout our operations. Five businesses, comprising offices, repair shops and manufacturing-based businesses, participated in the programme. The programme adopted the UK Carbon Trust calculator to measure and monitor the carbon footprint of the operations.

The objectives of the programme were as follows:

  • Test how we assess and measure our energy consumption
  • Identify areas and targets for improvement
  • Explore potential solutions for saving energy
  • Analyse the results of the programme and share our learning across the organisation

Following the early success of the programme, we have expanded its reach in 2010. We are also working to prepare all our UK businesses for the introduction of Carbon Reduction Commitment ("CRC") regulations.

Another way we support environmental stewardship is by helping our customers to develop alternative energy projects.

Wood Group offers a range of services in the renewable energy sector that enable our customers to plan and develop wind, tidal and carbon capture projects. We have provided front-end engineering and design for a carbon capture and storage project in the United Arab Emirates, engineering and management services for wave energy projects, and engineering, procurement and construction for onshore/offshore wind farms.
