Supporting role in well control

Subsea and deepwater well control are of vital importance to the oil and gas industry. Oil spill containment is always high on the safety agenda and the infrastructure put in place to support this is crucial to incident response.

Two recent projects have highlighted how Wood Group’s technical expertise is used to benefit organisations, which can play a key part in the event of well control incidents.

The engineering, maintenance support and operations expertise within Wood Group Mustang, Wood Group Kenny and Wood Group PSN has supported two clients; Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC) and Oil Spill Response (Capping) Limited (OSRCL).

Wood Group Mustang has completed engineering services for the two MWCC vessels that can be deployed in the event of a deepwater well control incident in the US Gulf of Mexico to help protect this area. Services provided included the follow-on design engineering, on-site engineering, integration and testing of systems and components from multiple vendors, field engineering support, and management of US regulatory review.

Wood Group PSN is currently providing commissioning services and has reservist personnel who will be deployed to support commissioning activities and operate the production equipment on-board should the vessels be called into action in the event of an incident. Working with OSRCL, Wood Group Kenny will provide the maintenance support for an important element of a containment toolkit designed for the Subsea Well Response Project (SWRP). WGK took an innovative approach in the SWRP to engineer the flexibles, improving traditional design to fulfil the criteria for this standby kit. The toolkits would be used to control hydrocarbon release in the event of a subsea well control incident and is stored at sites in the UK, Singapore and Brazil.
