CFD is a well-established computational tool that can be used to provide tangible benefits to a range of renewable energy projects, including wave and tidal.

Unlike the more mature wind industry, the wave and tidal sector does not yet have established methodologies and technology for energy convertor devices. The two analysis tools used most frequently in marine projects are the creation of a prototype device or the use of advanced CFD models.

In wave and tidal energy applications, CFD modelling is used for the following:

  • Tidal stream resource assessment
  • Optimisation of tidal array design and configuration
  • Assessment of tidal turbine influence on fluid flow environment and energy extraction
  • Examination of tidal turbine blade loading effect

CFD models for wave and tidal projects undergo a verification process to ensure that the flow model is capturing the required flow phenomenon and providing results that are consistent with real values.

Amongst Wood Group’s experience of wave and tidal CFD modelling, we have taken part in a tidal energy convertor study. The study simulated placement of tidal energy convertors (TECs) in an array using bathymetric data, allowing the identification of optimum locations for tidal devices within a tidal farm.
