When drilling offshore wells with dynamically positioned (DP) drilling rigs, well specific operational Guidelines (WSOG) are typically created for every well location.
The WSOG specifies when certain actions, such as suspending drilling and going on standby, should be undertaken based on the operational limits of the drilling riser and critical parameters such as upper and lower flex joint angles. Analysts can now quickly generate results based on any number of loading conditions and create industry-standard plot information in a much more efficient manner than previously possible.
To develop the WSOG, a large number of scenarios are simulated using global riser analysis. Different parameters such as riser top tension and mud weight are adjusted and the effects on the operating envelope of the drilling rig are assessed. All of this information feeds directly into guideline documents outlining the operating criteria for a DP rig.
Traditionally the results from analyses have been collated into a physical operational guidelines document showing plots and tables for each loading scenario. Feedback from both drilling contractors and operators has shown an appetite to provide operational guidelines in a much more interactive and visual manner.
With the paper based approach, offshore operators are required to search through pages of reports to find loading scenarios which match their present operating conditions. To address this requirement, and revolutionise how operational guidelines are created onshore and interpreted offshore, we developed OptiView.
OptiView is a new module of DeepRiser that allows operating criteria such as operability envelopes and drift-off results to be generated and collated efficiently by the analyst. The analyst can quickly generate results based on any number of loading conditions and create industry-standard plot information in a much more efficient manner than previously possible.
The results data can then simply be packaged together and transmitted offshore to standalone OptiView software running on the DP rig. All results created by the analyst onshore can be viewed interactively by the offshore operator. This allows the offshore operator to select the relevant operational criteria, allowing OptiView to display results relating to their current operational conditions.
There is considerable pressure on the industry to ensure uptime is maximised on DP drilling rigs. With OptiView, results can rapidly be created by the onshore analyst and transmitted offshore to provide decision grade information that can easily and interactively be interrogated by offshore rig crew.
