Vibration analysis training

Master vibration analysis for effective condition based predictive maintenance

Vibration analysis enables the early diagnosis of faults in machinery: it is a critical tool in condition based predictive maintenance programs. Wood’s internationally recognised training provides the necessary skills and competency to measure and assess machinery condition.

We offer VCAT I and VCAT II courses in our Perth and Brisbane offices

Wood VCAT vibration courses are delivered in compliance with International Standards and offer optional certification by the Australian Institute for Non-Destructive Testing (AINDT).

Vibration analysis category 1 (VCAT I)

The VCAT I qualification equips vibration analysts with the foundational knowledge required to acquire reliable vibration data with consistent repeatability, and to recognise departures from normal behaviour through single‑value measurements and trend analysis.

The VCAT I qualification is a precursor to the VCAT II training for those wanting to develop further skills in analysis and corrective action recommendations.

Duration3 days training
Certification2 hour exam (optional)
  • Maintenance strategies
  • Introduction to condition monitoring
  • Vibration fundamentals
  • Vibration data collection
  • General fault recognition
  • Plant and equipment fundamentals
  • Acceptance testing standards and codes
  • Correctly undertake vibration data collection
  • Operate portable instrumentation on preassigned routes
  • Acquire readings from installed instrumentation
  • Conduct vibration testing using pre-defined procedures
  • Compare measurements with alert levels
  • Correct data collection and control
  • Evaluate and report measurement results
  • Vibration data collection personnel
  • Anyone new to vibration monitoring
  • Facility technicians
  • Condition monitoring personnel
  • Maintenance and reliability personnel
  • Operators, supervisors, engineers
  • Those working towards ISO VCAT II qualification

Vibration analysis category 2 (VCATII)

The VCAT II qualification equips vibration analysts with the foundational knowledge required to guide VCAT I personnel, define measurement activities, interpret and evaluate test result, diagnose common fault conditions, and recommend basic corrective actions.

The VCAT II qualification is a precursor to VCAT III training for those wanting to develop advanced skills in vibration analysis to include balance of plant and turbo machinery.

Pre-requisite:

VCAT I training is a prerequisite for VCAT II training. Exceptions may apply to candidates who meet the training hour and practical experience requirements for VCAT I without being certified as Category I.

Duration4 days training
Certification3 hour exam (optional)
  • Maintenance strategies
  • Introduction to condition monitoring
  • Vibration principles and techniques
  • Vibration analysis
  • Fault identification and severity recognition
  • Corrective actions
  • Reporting and documentation
  • Reference standards
  • Acceptance testing
  • Plant and equipment knowledge

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Conduct single-channel vibration analysis on machinery and components to diagnose faults and performance issues.
  • Select appropriate vibration measurement techniques based on equipment type and operating conditions.
  • Configure instruments to optimize resolution of amplitude, frequency, and time-domain data.
  • Perform vibration analysis to identify faults in rotating machinery and structural components.
  • Maintain a database of vibration analysis results and trend data for condition monitoring.
  • Classify, interpret, and evaluate vibration data in accordance with ISO 10816 or other relevant standards.
  • Recommend corrective actions to address identified vibration issues.
  • Recommend the use of complementary condition monitoring technologies, such as thermography or oil analysis, as needed.
  • Supervise and instruct personnel performing Category I and II vibration analysis duties, as defined by ISO 18436-2.
  • Vibration data collection personnel
  • Condition monitoring personnel
  • Reliability personnel
  • Facility engineers and technicians
  • Maintenance personnel
  • Anyone previously qualified to VCAT I
  • Those working to ISO VCAT III qualification on rotating equipment and structures

Frequently asked questions

Price

Is the certification application included in the course price?

Yes, the AINDT examination and application are both included in the course price.

What is included in the course price?

The course includes course handouts, training material, AINDT certification examination and application, morning tea and lunch (except for the AINDT examination session), and tea, coffee and juice every day.

General

Can I attend a category 1 course with no industry experience, or if I don’t have enough work experience to apply for full AINDT certification?

Yes, you can; category 1 courses are accessible to all levels of experience.

To apply for certification, you will need to attend the training and successfully pass the Wood training examination as well as the AINDT certification examination. You need to have accumulated between 6 and 12 months of verifiable work experience. These hours can be accumulated before and/or after the course over any period.

Can I attend a category 2 course if I haven’t completed the category 1?

The general rule is that you don’t need the full category 1 certification to attend a category 2 course, however you must complete the hours of training for category 1 before you can attend the category 2 training. In some extraordinary cases, AINDT could consider you for Mature Candidate Entry, where candidates may apply for direct entry into categories higher than category I. For more information, please contact us

Do you offer online training sessions?

We don’t offer online classes at the moment. All our courses are delivered in person, at our Wood offices in Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne. Other locations upon application.

AINDT certification examination

Do you have to do the certification examination?

You don’t have to do it; however, it is strongly recommended. This examination will qualify you to apply for the full AINDT certification, which is an internationally recognised third-party certification.

What happens if I can’t attend the certification examination on the last day?

If you can’t sit the examination at the end of the course, you have a year to do it. We hold examination sessions once per month, and there won’t be any additional costs to attend a different session. Please contact us to book a different examination session.

What happens if I fail the AINDT certification examination?

You will have to book a re-sit examination; additional fees will apply in that case. Please contact us for more information.

When will I get my AINDT examination results?

It takes around one month for the AINDT committee to review examinations and applications. They will contact you directly on the email address you provided on your AINDT form.
